Kościerskie Sanctuaries

Koscierzyna the only city in Europe has one of the parish two Marian shrines crowned by Pope John Paul II. These are the Shrine of Our Lady of Koscierzyna - Queen of the Family and the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Sorrows. The object of worship in the first case is a picture, another fourteenth-century pieta, a sculpture of Mary holding the dead body of Christ.

Crowned with the image of Our Lady of Koscierzyna located in the St. Trinity Church. This is a copy of the image of Our Lady of Snows imported from Rome, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, which is the Kościerzyna since 1660. The cult image of the Virgin in Kościerzyna developed and strengthened, as evidenced by silver sponsorship for the Madonna and Child robes and crowns. In 1776, the Holy Trinity Church was visited by an inspector Pomeranian Archdeacon – Bazyly Złocki, who carefully wrote down the results of the visit and the state of the church. After World War II, bishop of Chelmno, Casimir Joseph Kowalski, established in the applicable decree kościerski Parish Church of Our Lady of the shrine of worship. In 1998, thanks to the efforts of Fr. Pastor Marian Szczepiński and support of the bishops, Pope John Paul II allowed his insignia decorating the image. The image of Our Lady with the Child in her arms, placed in a side chapel of the parish church dates from the early seventeenth century from the beginning he was surrounded with a special reverence in Kashubia. For centuries, is famous for many graces. The image was crowned with papal crowns on May 16, 1998 every Wednesday the faithful gather at 9 PM on the roll call and pray the Rosary for the Holy Father and Catholic families.

In 1998 Kościerzyna and, therefore, the parish church. Holy Trinity Church, celebrated the 600 - anniversary of its existence. Catholic Holy Trinity Church is the oldest and largest in the entire decane. It is the only church in which every month are celebrated mass in the Kashubian language. On April 28, 1999, the City Council Resolution No. Koscierzyna XI/59/99 parish square solemnly gave the name of John Paul II. In summer, the John Paul II Square every Wednesday at 9 PM is rosary devotion.

Lady of Koscierzyna - Queen of the Family is also the patron of Kościerzyna. A figure of Our Lady of Sorrows, dating from 1430, called Pieta Kościerska, is in the chapel of the Immaculate Conception Sisters. Act of the coronation was done by Polish primate, Cardinal Jozef Glemp.
